Merely Human

Make them tremble in fear, O LORD. Let the nations know they are merely human.

– Psalm 9:20 (NLT)

My existence is an act of compassion. My existence is an act of kindness. My existence is a work of God.

When I was born 14.25 years ago, a destiny was written. A life was planned. A blueprint was sketched out by the Creator.

And He chose me.

For what I still have yet to find out. But it will unfold. Slowly and surely.

I know this, and I know it as true. And I don’t know about you, but thinking I’ve been fought, planned, and redeemed, can go to my head. All of a sudden I become “all that and a bag o’ chips.”

But the reality is, we are small.

This morning my Mom led a Bible Study for all o’ us kids based out of Romans chapter 1. The first word is Paul. Paul was an apostle who worked for the Lord as a missionary – traveling all over Asia to proclaim the Gospel to the Gentiles. He was also beheaded eventually by the Roman Emperor Nero for doing so.

Before Paul’s conversion, he murdered Christians for a living. Like, that was his job. He hated them and Jesus with his whole being. Also, his name was Saul of Tarsus before he was converted.

Why did he change his name? Well most people believe that he wanted to have a new name for his new life in Christ. Which is probably partly true, but another significant detail arises.

The name Saul is a Hebrew name; it means “Asked for; inquired by God.” Basically stating that this guy is sought out by God and made a big deal over. A big shot. But for Saul to change his name to Paul is incredible, because the name Paul is a Roman name and means “Little; or humble.” Therefore, the Apostle Paul went from being a big deal to a little deal. He knew that his life was completely a work of God and that part of it was huge. But as of him – himself – he was small and nothing compared to the awesomeness of God.

For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

– 1 Corinthians 1:25

Sometimes it’s hard to fathom the death of our Savior. Whipped, flogged, pierced, and bruised for our iniquity. Why? Because He loves us small little creatures. He had such a passion in His heart for us that He died to save us. Even though we’re so small and He’s so large and amazing, He still wants to make great things out of us! He picks us up in His hands and holds us when we fall. He molds us into amazing people and sends us out to make a difference!

“For the LORD will not abandon His people on account of His great name, because the LORD has been pleased to make you a people for Himself.

– 1 Samuel 12:22

That is who we are. Everyone talks about the identity crisis in our society – and the answer is here!

We are a people of God. A chosen race. Not the monkeys or the kangaroos. The human beings. The only ones who bear God’s image (Genesis 1:26). We are small, special, and chosen by God to do something great. All of us. We might be weak, but God’s power is strong and vibrant in us! It shines through us into the lives of those around us who do not believe. The lives of those who need a resurrection in their hearts. I once heard someone say that the power that parted the Red Sea is at our fingertips. And I believe it.

Isn’t it amazing if you just close your eyes and think about that? Just think (that’s an order. Like, for real) about how amazing that is. I repeated myself, but that’s ok. XD

Friends, we are only humans. We are small. But we have a Big God. And we bear His image – the image of OUR GOD! Like whoa. Just think about that, too. We bear the image of our God. Nothing else in this world can do that, right? Maybe you think I’m looney, but it’s the truth. And it’s worth believing. Don’t let it go to your head, let it go to your heart. Let it sink in.

We. Are. Small.

We. Are. Mighty.

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

– Romans 8:37

I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
